Portugal soccer legend Eusebio dies


Soccer legend Eusebio has died, aged 71, according to Portugal’s national broadcaster RTP.
Born in Mozambique in 1942 when it was still a Portuguese colony, the striker’s name was Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, but was known simply as Eusebio.
The Portuguese excelled in the 1966 World Cup, helping Portugal to finish in third place and being top goal-scorer in the tournament with nine goals – four of them in one match against North Korea.
Widely considered one of the best players of all-time, he scored 733 times in 745 professional matches.
He was voted by the international federation of football history and statistics (IFFHS) as sixth in its ranking of top players of the 20th century.
Famed for his ability to carve his way through defences to to score, he was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965.
He retired in 1975 after a career that included 64 caps and 41 international goals.
