WAYNE ROONEY Says He Will Make History And Become England’s Greatest Ever Goalscorer

Rooney has scored
41 goals for his country with Jimmy Greaves, on 44, Gary Lineker, 48
and Sir Bobby Charlton with 49 ahead of him.
With
San Marino tonight at Wembley and then Estonia away as England’s next
two opponents, captain Rooney is looking to fill his boots and is
confident Charlton’s record will be broken.
“It’s
there for me to overtake them all,” he said. “I feel I’m capable of
doing that. Jimmy Greaves, I’m three goals from him. That would be a
huge honour for me. Hopefully I’ll do that. I’m confident in myself and
believe I will [do it, but the game tomorrow is more important than me
scoring four or five goals.
“It would be great
to do it. I’d never have thought when I came into this England team that
I would be best goalscorer. It would be massive for me and make my
family proud. I want to do it. Hopefully one day I’ll be sat here having
won it.”
England manager
Roy Hodgson also backed his man to overhaul Greaves. “I hope Wayne
surpasses the record because I work with Wayne and didn’t with Jimmy,”
he said.

Rooney said it may prove tense again
tonight until the first goal is scored and recalled the last time San
Marino were at Wembley two years ago that it took a penalty from him
late in the first half to break the deadlock before England went on to
win 5-0.
“The last game it took 35 minutes
before we got the first goal. After that we got four more. We have to be
patient. The big difference with this game is the speed and tempo we
want to play at, the way we’ve been doing in training the last couple of
games. If we do that in the game, they’ll struggle to contain us.”
The Manchester United striker said he would happily forego the record if it meant England finally won a trophy.
“For a footballer, you’re in this game for your team-mates,” he said. “There’s nothing better than getting a trophy.”
Rooney
believes as well that his temperamental outbursts are behind him,
despite his sending off against West Ham last month for hacking down
Stewart Downing.
“I’ve just grown up in the last
couple of years,” he said. “I’ve made errors in the past. I understand
that. I haven’t gone for treatment. I didn’t think it was that bad to do
that.”
Rooney was also one of the few people to
escape unscathed from Roy Keane’s autobiography and said: “We were very
close. I can only talk on how I found Roy. We played for a year and a
half and he was a very nice, genuine, honest guy. He was a good leader
for us, a good captain and he was good for me.”
